Portable Ice Shanty Plans

by Ovidiu

This step by step diy project is about portable ice shanty plans. This lightweight shack frame is built from 2×2 lumber. This 6×6 ice fishing house has a lean to roof, and it features large windows on two sides. Take a look over the rest of my woodworking plans, if you want to get more building inspiration. Remember that you need to select the site for the shed with attention and that you have to comply with a few legal regulations.

When buying the lumber, you should select the planks with great care, making sure they are straight and without any visible flaws (cracks, knots, twists, decay). Investing in cedar or other weather resistant lumber is a good idea, as it will pay off on the long run. Use a spirit level to plumb and align the components, before inserting the galvanized screws, otherwise the project won’t have a symmetrical look. If you have all the materials and tools required for the project, you could get the job done in about a day. See all my Premium Plans HERE.

How to build a portable 6×6 ice shanty

Floor-frame---6x6

Floor-frame—6×6

The first step of the project is to build the floor frame. Cut the joists from 2×4 lumber. Lay the joists on a level surface. Drill pilot holes through the rim joists and insert 2 1/2″ screws. Make sure the corners are square and align the edges flush. Make sure you also frame the traps, by fitting 2×4 blockings.

Fitting the skids

Fitting the skids

Use 4×4 lumber for the skids. Make 45 degree cuts to both ends of the skids and locl them to the floor frame with ties.

Floor sheets

Floor sheets

Fit the 3/4″ plywood sheets to the joists. Align the edges flush, drill pilot holes and insert 1 5/8″ screws into the joists, every 8″. Leave no gaps between the sheets for a professional result. Cut out the traps and lock them into place with hinges.
