8×10 Wood Greenhouse Plans

by Ovidiu

This step by step diy project is about 8×10 greenhouse plans. If you want to build a hobby greenhouse from wood, you should definitely take a closer look to these plans. This greenhouse has a gable roof and doors placed to the front and to the back of the construction. Take a look over the rest of my woodworking plans, if you want to get more building inspiration.

When buying the lumber, you should select the planks with great care, making sure they are straight and without any visible flaws (cracks, knots, twists, decay). Investing in cedar or other weather resistant lumber is a good idea, as it will pay off on the long run. Use a spirit level to plumb and align the components, before inserting the galvanized screws, otherwise the project won’t have a symmetrical look. If you have all the materials and tools required for the project, you could get the job done in about a day. See all my Premium Plans HERE.

How to build a 8×10 wood greenhouse

Building the skids

Building the skids

The first step of the project is to build the skids for the greenhouse. As you can easily notice in the diagram, you need to make notches to both ends of the 4×4 beams. Make 1 3/4″ deep parallel cuts to the beams, as shown in the diagram. Use a chisel to remove the excess and then smooth the edges.

Building the base

Building the base

Select a proper location for the greenhouse, making sure you comply with the local codes. Check if the soil is fertile and then make sure the greenhouse will get at least 8″ of light every single day. Lay the skids on the ground, making sure the corners are square. Align the edges flush, drill pilot holes and insert 3 1/2″ screws to lock the beams together tightly.

Fitting the stakes

Fitting the stakes

Use 2×3 takes to secure the beams into place tightly. Use 2 1/2″ screws to secure the stakes to the bottom frame. Place the skids evenly spaced for a professional result.

Front-wall-frame

Front-wall-frame

Use 2×4 lumber to build the front wall and the back wall for the greenhouse. Cut the components at the right dimensions and then assemble them together with 3 1/2″ screws. Drill pilot holes through the plates and insert 3 1/2″ screws into the studs. Place the studs evenly spaced, for a professional result. Align the edges flush and make sure the corners are square.

Side-wall-frame

Side-wall-frame

Frame the sides walls for the greenhouse from 2×4 lumber. Drill pilot holes through the plates and insert 3 1/2″ screws into the studs. Place the studs every 24″ on center for a professional result.

Assembling the frame of the greenhouse

Assembling the frame of the greenhouse

Lay the wall frames to the base of the greenhouse. Use a spirit level to plumb the wall frames, drill pilot holes through the bottom plates and insert 3 1/2″ screws into the base. Moreover, you need to lock the adjacent walls together. Align the edges flush, drill pilot holes and insert 3 1/2″ screws. Check if the corners are square.

Fitting the top ridge

Fitting the top ridge

Continue the project by fitting the top ridge to the greenhouse. Cut the supports from 2×4 lumber and the top ridge from 2×6 lumber. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the supports and secure them to the center of the fornt and back walls with 2 1/2″ screws. Plumb the supports and fit the top ridge. Insert 2 1/2″ screws to lock the components into place tightly.

Build the rafters for the greenhouse from 2×4 lumber. Make the angle cuts to both ends of the rafters and smooth the edges with sandpaper.

Fit the rafters to the top of the greenhouse. Place the rafters every 24″ on center and then lock them into place with screws. Secure the rafters to the top ridge and to the side walls with screws.
