This step by step diy woodworking project is about compost sifter plans. If you want to build a simple compost sifter from 2x4s and 1x4s, this project is the one you need.   • A – 2 pieces of 2×2 lumber – 24″ long, 2 pieces – 15″ long FRAME
  • B – 2 pieces of 2×4 lumber – 24″ long, 2 pieces – 15″ long SIFTER
  • C – 1 piece of 1/2″ mesh – 18″x24″ long MESH
  • D – 2 pieces of handles HANDLES

Assembling the sifter frame

The first step of the project is to build the frame for the compost sifter. Align the edges and make sure the corners are square. Drill pilot holes through the side slats and insert 2 1/2″ lag screws into the perpendicular components.

Cut a piece of 1/2″ mesh and staple it to the frame.

Next, you need to build the bottom frame from 2×2 lumber. Cut the components at the right dimensions and align the edges. Drill pilot holes through the side components and insert 2 1/” lag screws to lock them together.

Fit the second frame to the bottom of the sifter. Align the edges with attention. Drill pilot holes through the frame and insert 2 1/2″ screws into the sifter.

Attach the handles to the sides of the sifter. Center the handles to the sides and lock them into place with screws.

Fill the holes with wood putty and let them dry out for a few hours. Smooth the surface with 100-220 grit sandpaper and remove the residues with a damp cloth.

Top Tip: Apply a few coats of paint or stain to the components, to enhance the look of the project.
