Building an outdoor table

Building the frame of the bench

Building the frame of the bench

The first step of the woodworking project is to build the frame of the bench. As you can easily notice in the plans, we recommend you to assemble the frame out of 1×3 lumber.

Cut the components at the right size and assemble them together with 1 1/4″ galvanized screws and waterproof glue. Check if the corners are right-angled before inserting the screws by using a carpentry square.

Attaching the legs

Attaching the legs

The next step of the woodworking project is to attach the 1×4 legs to the frame of the bench. In order to get a professional result, we recommend you to plumb the legs with a spirit level and to insert 1 1/4″ screws from the inside of the frame into the legs.

Make sure you leave no gaps between the adjacent legs, in order to get the job done in a professional manner. Add waterproof glue to the joints in order to enhance the rigidity of the frame and a few 1 1/4″ finishing nails.

Building the seat

Building the seat

Continue the project by assembling the seat of the outdoor bench. Drill pilot holes at both ends of the short slats and insert 1 1/4″ screws into the side components. Don’t forget that it is essential to place the slats equally-spaced, in order to get a symmetrical appearance.

Add waterproof glue to the joints, in order to enhance the rigidity of the structure. Build the center of the seat out of 1×4 slats, while the side components should be built out of 1×3 slats.

Attaching the seat

Attaching the seat

Attaching the seat to the frame of the bench is a straight-forward job, as you just need to drill pocket holes through the frame and insert 1 1/4″ screws into the seat. Align the seat properly before inserting the screws. Center the frame to the seat in a professional manner.

One of the last steps of the woodworking project is to take care of the finishing touches. Therefore, fill the pilot holes with wood putty and smooth the surface with 120-grit sandpaper.

Top Tip: In order to protect the lumber from water damage, we recommend you to cover the components with several coats of paint. Place the wooden chair in a proper location and move it whenever necessary.

You need to drill pocket holes at both ends of the short slats and then insert the screws into the long slats. You can see what jig you need here: http://myoutdoorplans.com/support-us/
