Shop Stool Plans

by Ovidiu

This step by step diy woodworking project is about shop stool plans. If you want to build a basic stool for your shop and you haven’t found yet the right plans for your needs, we recommend you to pay attention to the instructions described in the article. Work with attention and don’t forget to adjust the size and the shape of the stool to suit your needs and to match the style of the rest of the furniture.

There are many aspects that you should take into account when building the shop stool, so make sure you plan everything from the very beginning. Invest in high quality materials that are weather-resistant, such as pine, cedar or redwood. Always take accurate measurements and align the components at both ends before inserting the screws. In addition, drill pilot holes through the slats, to prevent the wood from splitting. See all my Premium Plans HERE.

Building a shop stool

Building the legs of the stool

Building the legs of the stool

The first step of the woodworking project is to build the legs of the stool. As you can easily notice in the plans, we recommend you to cut the ends of the 1×4 slats in a decorative manner.

In this manner, the shop stool will have a nice appearance and it will enhance the look of your property. Take accurate measurements and smooth the cut edges with a piece of sandpaper.

Building the sides of the stool

Continue the woodworking project by attaching the 1×4 slats to the side legs, as shown in the plans. Work with attention and make sure the slats are equally-spaced before continuing the project.

Align the legs at both ends and check if the corners are right-angled, before inserting the screws. Drill pilot holes through the slats before inserting the screws into the legs.

Assembling the sides of the stool frame

The next step of the project is to assemble the other two faces of the stool. Follow the instructions shown in the plans, if you want to get the job done properly from the very beginning.

Assembling the frame of the stool

Assembling the frame of the stool

Assembling the shop stool is a straight-forward process, as it requires basic woodworking skills and materials. When assembling the sides of the stool, we recommend you to drill pocket holes through the slats, as in the image.

Make sure the sides are aligned at both ends and the corners are right-angled, before inserting the screws into place. Add waterproof glue to the joints, if you want to enhance the rigidity of the structure.

Attaching the slats to the frame of the stool

Attaching the slats to the frame of the stool

Attaching the seat slats is easy and it doesn’t take a lot of time. In order to get a professional result, we recommend you to cut the slats at the right size and to lock them to the frame with galvanized screws.

Moreover, we recommend you to fit the slats equally-spaced, if you want to get a nice appearance. Pay attention to the overhangs, otherwise the shop stool won’t have a symmetrical appearance.

One of the last steps of the woodworking project is to take care of the finishing touches. Therefore, fill the pilot holes with wood putty and smooth the surface with 120-grit sandpaper.

Top Tip: In order to protect the lumber from water damage, we recommend you to cover the components with several coats of paint. Place the wooden chair in a proper location and move it whenever necessary.
