Picnic Bench Plans

by Ovidiu

This step by step diy woodworking project is about picnic bench plans. If you want to learn more about how to build a basic wooden bench for your garden, you should pay attention to the instructions described in the article. There are so many plans and designs to choose from, that you should really pay attention to the alternatives, before starting the actual construction of the bench.

From our own experience, we recommend you to invest in high-quality materials, such as pine, cedar or redwood, as they are both durable and have a natural beautiful finish. Cut the components at the right size and lock them together with galvanized screws. Drill pilot holes before inserting the screws, to prevent the wood from splitting. Don’t forget to countersink the head of the screws, if you want to get a nice appearance. See all my Premium Plans HERE.

Building a picnic bench

Building the bench legs

Building the bench legs

The first step of the woodworking project is to build the legs of the picnic bench. As you can easily notice in the plans, we recommend you to mark the cut lines on the pieces of lumber and to get the job done with a circular saw.

If you want to get a professional result, we recommend you to smooth the cut edges with medium-grit sandpaper. It is essential to build both legs having in mind the same size and shape.

Fitting the stretcher

Fitting the stretcher

The next step is to fit the 2×6 stretcher between the two sides of the bench, as shown in the plans. Drill pocket holes at both sides of the support and insert the screws into the legs.

Add waterproof glue to the joints, if you want to enhance the rigidity of the structure.

Fitting the bench seat

Fitting the bench seat

Attaching the seat slat to the frame of the bench is a straight-forward job, as you just need to drill several pilot holes through the legs and through the support, before inserting the screws into the seat.

Top Tip: Make sure you align the slat at both ends before inserting the screws, otherwise the bench won’t have a neat appearance. Add glue to the joints, in order to enhance the bond of the components.

If you want to add value to the picnic bench, we recommend you to cut the corner with a circular saw. Smooth the cut edges with sandpaper, as well as the rest of the exposed edges.

One of the last steps of the woodworking project is to take care of the finishing touches. Therefore, fill the pilot holes with wood putty and smooth the surface with 120-grit sandpaper.

Top Tip: In order to protect the lumber from water damage, we recommend you to cover the components with several coats of paint. Place the porch bench in a proper location and move it whenever necessary.
