Outdoor Privacy Screen Plans

by Ovidiu

This step by step diy project is about outdoor privacy screen plans. This wood privacy screen is ideal for any backyard, as you can hide the garbage bins or the A/C units. These privacy screens are very easy to build and then will enhance the look of the property. Take a look over the rest of my woodworking plans, if you want to get more building inspiration.

When buying the lumber, you should select the planks with great care, making sure they are straight and without any visible flaws (cracks, knots, twists, decay). Investing in cedar or other weather resistant lumber is a good idea, as it will pay off on the long run. Use a spirit level to plumb and align the components, before inserting the galvanized screws, otherwise the project won’t have a symmetrical look. If you have all the materials and tools required for the project, you could get the job done in about a day. See all my Premium Plans HERE.

How to build a garden privacy screen

Small panel frame

Small panel frame

The first step of the project is to build the frame for the small panels. As you can easily notice in the diagram, you need to cut the components from 2×4 lumber at the right dimensions. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the horizontal supports and insert 2 1/2″ screws into the perpendicular supports. Align the edges flush and make sure the corners are square.

Small panels slats

Small panels slats

Use 1×4 lumber for the panels. Cut the slats at 24″ and then drill pocket holes at both ends. Place a piece of 3/4″ plywood between the slats to create even gaps. Insert 1 1/4″ screws to secure the slats to the frame.

The next step of the project is to build the frame for the large panel. Cut the components from 2×4 lumber. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the horizontal supports and secure them to the vertical supports with 2 1/2″ screws. Make sure the corners are square and align the edges flush.

Fit the 1×4 slats to the panel, after drilling pocket holes at both ends. Fit the slats inside the frame and secure them to the frame with 1 1/4″ screws. Fit 3/4″ plywood spacers between slats.

Lay the two small panels and the large panel to a level surface. Align the edges flush and install hinges to lock them together tightly.
