Outdoor Chair Plans

by Ovidiu

Step by step woodworking project about outdoor chair plans. A simple chair would enhance the look of you patio and garden, therefore you have to work with great care during the construction process. In this article we show you how to build a garden chair, paying also attention to the materials and tools required for the job. Taking into account the many design and shapes you can choose from, we recommend you to take your time when choosing the final plans for your project. On the other hand, you have to use lumber design for this task, such as redwood, cedar or pressure-treated, which are durable and have a nice appearance.

On the other hand, you should remember that you could adjust the size of the outdoor chair, as to fit your needs and tastes. Nevertheless, modifying the size of the chair would have a direct impact on the wooden components, therefore compute the appropriate size, before making the cuts. Sand the edges of the components with a sand block, or round them with a router and a 1/4” bit. In addition, fill the cracks and the holes with wood putty, before sanding the whole wooden surface. Building an outdoor chair will help you learn new woodworking skills and and is an opportunity to creating something unique by yourself. Even if you don’t have expertise in this field, you could still get a professional result, by paying attention to our instructions and tips.

Top Tip: In order to build a durable chair, you have to buy lumber designed for outdoor use. Therefore, redwood, cedar or pressure-treated lumber are good choices, as they have a nice appearance and are resistant to water damage and decay (if treated with proper products).

Outdoor Chair Plans

Back-legs-plans

Back-legs-plans

First of all you have to build the front and the back legs. While for the front legs you should use 2×4 lumber, in order to cut out the back leg, we recommend you to select a perfectly straight 2×10 beam (make sure it doesn’t have any visible flaws).

Use a straight edge and a pencil to draw the guidance lines, as in our free plans. Afterwards, use a circular law to cut the component and smooth the edges with a sander.

The next step is to attach the side braces to the leg, as in the image. Cut out the ends of the 2×4 aprons, by making many parallel cuts with a circular saw (set the blade to a depth of 3/4”). Drill several pilot holes tough the aprons and legs, before inserting the 2 1/2” carriage bolts.

Top Tip: Countersink the head of the screws, in order to get a neat look. In addition, apply a good wood glue on the joints, to enhance the bond of the wooden components.

Installing the fron apron

Installing the fron apron

After you have built the two sides of the outdoor chair, you should install the front and the back aprons. Drill several pilot holes in the wooden aprons, in order to prevent the wood from splitting. Drive in 2 1/2” screws, making sure you don’t tighten them too much.

Place the chair on a level surface. Plumb the side components of the chair, before locking them together with the front and back aprons.

Next, install 1×6 slats into place, in order to build the seat of the outdoor chair. Align the slats at both ends, before locking them into place with galvanized screws. Round the edges of the slats with a router and 1/4” drill bit.

Top Tip: Place the slats equally spaced (leave about 1/4-1/2” between the wooden boards). Drill pilot holes before inserting the decking screws, to avoid splitting the wood.

Installing the arm rests

Installing the arm rests

One of the last steps of this woodworking project is to install the arm rests into place. Cut the ends of the 1×4 boards to fit around the back support. Secure the 1×4 boars into place by driving in several 2” screws trough the components.

Top Tip: Use a spirit level to make sure the arm rests are horizontal. Make sure you countersink the head of the screws, in order to obtain a nice appearance.

After you have built the outdoor chair, you should fill the heads of the screws and the cracks with wood putty. Leave the compound to harden for several hours and afterwards sand the wooden surface with a sander (use medium-grit sander), along the wood grain.

To Tip: If you will place the chair in your garden, you have to apply several coats of wood stain, in order to protect it from water damage or wood decay.
