Free Outdoor Chair Plans

This step by step diy project is about diy outdoor chair plans. I designed this chair so it would match the outdoor sofa plans I already have on the site. If you want to make a nice relaxation area in your backyard, these chairs would be the perfect addition. You only need basic tools and skills to build these chairs, but you will also save a significant amount of money. Take a look over the rest of my woodworking plans, if you want to get more building inspiration.

When buying the lumber, you should select the planks with great care, making sure they are straight and without any visible flaws (cracks, knots, twists, decay). Investing in cedar or other weather resistant lumber is a good idea, as it will pay off on the long run. Use a spirit level to plumb and align the components, before inserting the galvanized screws, otherwise the project won’t have a symmetrical look. DIY Outdoor Chair Plans

Building the sides for the chair

The first step of the project is to build the sides for the outdoor chair. Use 2×6 lumber for the horizontal framing and 2×2 lumber for the legs and for the armrests. Take accurate measurements and cut the components at the right dimensions. Drill pocket holes as shown in the diagram and lock everything together tightly with 2 1/2″ screws. Align the edges with attention and make sure the corners are right-angled.

Fitting the front support

Continue the project by assembling the outdoor chair, by fitting the front support. Cut the 2×6 slat at 24″ and drill pocket holes at both ends. Fit the support into place, align the edges and insert 2 1/2″ screws to lock everything together tightly. Add glue to the joints and make sure the corners are right-angled.

Fitting the back supports

Continue the project by fitting the support to the back of the diy outdoor chair, as well as the support for the backrest. Drill pocket holes and secure the components into place with 2 1/2″ pocket screws.

Fitting the seat supports

Next, you need to attach the 2×4 cleats to the frame of the chair. These cleats will hold the support slats for the seat cushion. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the cleats and secure them to the sides with 2 1/2″ screws. Add glue to the joints and make sure the edges are perfectly aligned.

Building the backrest

Build the backrest for the outdoor chair from 1×4 lumber. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the vertical slats and insert 1 1/4″ pocket screws to lock them into place. Add waterproof glue to the joints for a better bond between the components.

Fitting the backrest

Fit the backrest to the frame of the chair. Align the backrest with attention and secure it to the back support and to the cleat using 2″ brad nails or 1 1/4″ screws. If you use screws, drill pilot holes to prevent the wood from splitting.

Fitting the seat support slats

Continue the diy patio project by attaching the 1×4 slats to the cleats. Place the support slats equally spaced, so they will hold the weight in a professional manner. Drill pilot holes at both ends of the slats and secure them into place with 1 1/4″ screws.

How to build an outdoor chair

Now that you have assembled the patio chair, you need to take care of the finishing touches. Fill the pocket holes with plugs and fill the dents with woo putty. Smooth everything with 120-220 grit sandpaper and remove the residues with a damp cloth. Apply a few coats of stain and then seal everything with spar varnish, to protect the wood from the elements.
