Building a craft table

Building the shelves

Building the shelves

The first step of the project is to build the sides of the craft table. We recommend you to cut the components at the right size, out of 1×12 lumber. Take accurate measurements and get the job done with a circular saw.

It is essential to check if the corners are right-angled before locking the components with 1 1/4″ screws. Make sure you drill pocket holes as shown in the diagram, as to create durable and sturdy joints. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the shelves. Drill pocket holes along the top of the vertical slats.

Attaching the trims to the shelves

If you want to enhance the appearance of the craft table, we recommend you to attach 1×2 trims to both sides of the shelves, as described in the plans. Cut the trims at the right size, align them at both ends and secure them into place with 1 1/4″ finishing nails and waterproof glue.

Make sure there are no gaps between the trims, if you want to get the job done in a professional manner. In addition, we recommend you to smooth the exposed edges with sandpaper.

Set the sides of the table on a level surface, making sure you leave between them about 34″. Work with attention and make sure the shelf units are perfectly plumb.

Attaching the tabletop supports

The next step of the woodworking project is to attach the tabletop supports to the shelf units. In order to get the job done in a professional manner, we recommend you to cut the supports out of a piece of 1×12 lumber and to lock them into place with galvanized screws.

Add waterproof glue to enhance the rigidity of the structure. Although this step is not compulsory, it will most certainly add value to the woodworking project.

Attaching the tabletop

Attaching the tabletop

Attaching the tabletop to the wooden structure is a straight-forward process, as it doesn’t require complex techniques. We recommend you to cut the 3/4″ project panel at the right size and to attach it to the side shelves with screws.

After aligning the components at both ends, we recommend you to drill pilot holes through the supports and to insert 2″ screws into the tabletop. Add waterproof glue to the joints, in order to create rigid joints.

One of the last steps of the woodworking project is to take care of the finishing touches. Therefore, fill the pilot holes with wood putty and smooth the surface with 120-grit sandpaper.

Top Tip: In order to protect the lumber from water damage, we recommend you to cover the components with several coats of paint. Place the wooden table in a proper location and move it whenever necessary.
