Adirondack chair plans free

by Ovidiu

This step by step woodworking project is about adirondack chair plans free. Building a wooden chair is a great project for woodworking beginners, as you can get the job done in just a day and it doesn’t required an extensive expertise or expensive tools. After you select the lumber (check if all the slats are perfectly straight and don’t have cracks, twists or knots), you need to make the components and to joint them together tightly.

In order to build a adirondack chair with a neat appearance, you have to take several aspects into account. Therefore, you need to sand the edges of the components with a sand block, or round them with a router and a 1/4” bit. Moreover, we recommend you to align all the components at both ends before driving in the screws. Work with great care and with attention, making sure all the slats are placed equally spaced. The first step of the project is to build the legs of the wooden chair. While the front legs don’t require much craftsmanship, the cross-legs required a lot of attention, as you need to make complex curves cuts. Mark the cut lines on the 1×6 boards and use a jigsaw to get the job done accurately.

Top Tip: Sand the cut edges with medium-grit sandpaper or round them with a router and a 1/4” bit, making sure don’t damage them.

Next, you have to assemble the sides of the adirondack chair, using our free plans. As you can see in the image, you need to drill pilot holes both trough the front legs and trough the seat support.

In order to obtain a proper result, we recommend you to align the components at both ends, making sure the front leg is plumb. Next, drive in the carriage bolts trough the components and lock them together.

Installing the braces

Installing the braces

After assembling the both sides of the wooden chair together, you should join them together with 1×4 braces. As you should easily notice in the image, you need to plumb the sides of the chair and to install the braces.

Top Tip: Drill pilot holes trough the seat supports to secure the front brace properly. Oppositely, pre-drill the back brace and lock it to the frame of the chair with 3” screws.

Next, you need to build the back support of the chair, as in the free plans. Round the one end of the slats, making the cuts with a jigsaw. Place the 1×6 slats on a level surface, leaving about 1/2” between them. Place the braces on the slats, make pilot holes and insert the 1 1/4”.

Top Tip: Work with great attention and with good judgement, if you want to obtain a professional result.

Installing the back rest

Next, place the back support into place and to lock it with screws. Therefore, we recommend you to fit the component and lock it tightly with screws trough the seat supports into the bottom brace of the backrest. In addition, drive in screws trough the backrest into the back brace.

We will also drive screws trough the armrests into the middle brace of the backrest. Also, you can adjust the angle of the back support.

Installing the arm rests

Installing the arm rests

Building the armrests is easy, as you just need to cut them out of 1×6 boards. You could adjust the size and the shape of the armrests according to your needs. After marking the cut lines with a pencil, use a jigsaw to make the components. Round the exposed edges with a router.

Top Tip: Align the armrests at both ends, drill pilot holes at both ends and insert the 2” screws. Don’t forget to countersink the head of the screws, if you want to obtain a neat look.

Attaching the seat slats

Attaching the seat slats

After assembling the frame of the chair, you need to get the job done by attaching the seat slats, made out of 1×2 lumber. Leave small gaps between the slats (about 1/2 inches) and pre -drill them at both ends, before driving in the 1 1/4” into the frame. Also, countersink the head of the screws.

Top Tip: We recommend you to sand the exposed edges with a sand-block, or you could just round them with a router and 1/4” bit.

Last but not least, we recommend you to take care of the finishing touches. Therefore, fill the holes with a wood filler and let the compound to dry out for about several hours. Afterwards, sand the wooden surface along the wood grain, using 120-grit sandpaper.

Top Tip: Vacuum the residues thoroughly, before covering the wooden surface with several coats of stain. Make sure you apply the products in a properly-ventilated location.

Question: I’m one of your subscribers. I cannot find the plans for the picnic table that converts into a bench seat. It looked great and I want to build it.

Can you send me a link to the plans for this?
Thanks,
Bruce
