Home Bench 2×6 Garden Bench Plans

2×6 Garden Bench Plans

by Ovidiu

This step by step diy project is about 2×6 garden bench plans. I have designed this garden bench with backrest so you can build one using just 2×6 lumber. If you can get past the bulky design, this sturdy bench will be a great addition to any backyard. Make sure you invest in weather resistant lumber, such as cedar or redwood, for a professional result and durability. Take a look over the rest of my woodworking plans, if you want to get more building inspiration.

When buying the lumber, you should select the planks with great care, making sure they are straight and without any visible flaws (cracks, knots, twists, decay). Investing in cedar or other weather resistant lumber is a good idea, as it will pay off on the long run. Use a spirit level to plumb and align the components, before inserting the galvanized screws, otherwise the project won’t have a symmetrical look. If you have all the materials and tools required for the project, you could get the job done in about a day. See all my Premium Plans HERE.

How to build a 2×6 garden bench

Bench-frame

Bench-frame

The first step of the project is to build the frame for the bench. Use 2×6 lumber for the components. Drill pilot holes through the side supports and insert 2 1/2″ screws into the perpendicular component.

Front legs

Front legs

Use 2×6 lumber for the front legs. Cut the legs at 22″. Smooth the edges with sandpaper or a router.

Back-legs

Back-legs

The next step is to assemble the back legs. Cut the components at shown in the free plans. Drill pocket holes along the bottom edge of the angle support. Use 2 1/2″ screws and glue to lock the two components together tightly.

Continue the project by attaching the legs to the bench frame. Align the edges with attention, drill pilot holes and insert 2 1/2″ screws to lock them into place tightly. Add glue to the joints.

Seat slats

Seat slats

Fit 2×6 slats to the seat of the bench. Leave no gaps between the slats, drill pilot holes and insert 2 1/2″ screws to secure them into place tightly.

Armrests

Armrests

Use 2×6 lumber for the armrests. Mark the cut lines on the slats and then get the job done with a jigsaw.

Attach the armrests to the frame of the bench. Drill pilot holes and insert 2 1/2″ screws.

Backrest slats

Last but not least, you need to attach the 2×6 slats to the back of the bench frame. Align the slats at both ends and then fit a piece of 1/2″ plywood between them. Lock the slats to the backrest supports with clamps, drill pilot holes and insert 2 1/2″ screws to lock them into place tightly.

Make sure you take care of the finishing touches. Fill the holes with wood putty and then smooth the surface with 120-220 grit sandpaper. Apply a few coats of paint or stain over the components to protect them from decay.
