16×24 Garage Gable Roof Plans

This step by step diy woodworking project is about free 16×24 garage gable roof plans. This is PART 2 of the single car detached garage, where I show you how to continue the project and get the job done. In this article you will learn how to build and attach the overhangs and the roof. Make sure you take a look over the rest of plans to see alternatives and more projects for your garden.

When buying the lumber, you should select the planks with great care, making sure they are straight and without any visible flaws (cracks, knots, twists, decay). Investing in cedar or other weather resistant lumber is a good idea, as it will pay off on the long run. Use a spirit level to plumb and align the components, before inserting the galvanized screws, otherwise the project won’t have a symmetrical look. How to build a 16×24 garage gable roof

Assembling the overhangs

First of all, you need to build the overhangs for the garage, as shown in the diagram. Drill pilot holes through the rafters and insert 3 1/2″ screws into the blockings. Place the blockings equally spaced and align the edges flush.

Fit the overhangs to the front and to the back of the garage. Align the edges with attention, drill pilot holes and insert 3 1/2″ screws to secure them into place tightly.

Next, attach the 1/2″ plywood sheets to he top of the garage. Start with the bottom left and go to the top of the roof structure. Leave no gaps between the sheets and insert 1 5/8″ screws, every 8″ along the rafters.

Fitting the side roof trims

Fit the 1×6 trims to the sides of the roof. Use 8d nails to secure the trims to the trusses.

Front and back roof trims

Use 1×6 lumber for the front and back roof trims. Make the angle cuts with a miter saw and then lock the trims into place with nails.

Fitting the roofing

Cover the roof of the garage with roofing felt, making sure the strips overlap at least 2″. Secure the tar paper to the plywood sheets with roofing staples. In addition, cut a large piece for the top ridge. Fit the side drip edges over the roofing felt, while the bottom drip edges should be fit under.

Read the instructions labeled on the asphalt shingle packs before installing them into place tightly. Start with the bottom left side of the roof and install them all the way to the top.

Fitting the siding sheets

Last but not least, you need to take care of the finishing touches. Wrap the garage with homewrap and then make it pretty with T1-11 siding sheets. Alternatively, you can go for metal sheets from the very beginning and not use OSB and siding.

Fitting the corner trims

Fit the 1×4 trims to the corners of the garage, to enhance the look of the construction. Install the 10′ garage door to the front opening.

Fit the side door and window to the garage and then attach the decorative trims.
