From DAVID ZOBECK,

I choose to build the 16×12 gambrel roof storage barn. Using the materials list I found my total cost to be just under $4,000. But as I looked over the information I found several ways to cut costs. I choose not to cut the 2×4 by 12 ft for the gambrel roof rafters to cut two 55″ in lengths. I was able to waste less by purchasing 10ft lengths. Additionally I materials list had 16 4X8 plywood sheathing.

I would have to cut them to 55 lengths and waste 41 in of plywood. So I used the “waste” and saved plywood shealthing. I also was able to reuse studs from a dog kennel that stood on the cement pad. I also bought my a large portion of materials when Menards Lumber gave an 11% rebate. I applied this to the final purchases. Overall, my material cost me about $2500 It took me about 3 days with help from my son in law to complete about 80% of the work.

If I had it to do again there are a few things I would do differently. The biggest is not to build the gambrel over hang in one piece. I would build it in four sections which would be easier to lift and position. It is not perfect but compared to a prebuilt 16X12 which listed for $6000 and was shorter I paid far less.
