This step by step diy project is about duck house plans. Building a wooden duck house is a great weekend project, especially if you want to attract ducks to your yard or you just need a new challenge. Any person with basic woodworking skills can get the job done in less than a day, if the right plans and materials are used. Take a look over the rest of the birdhouse plans, if you want to get an idea on the alternatives.
Therefore, we recommend you to select the lumber for the construction with great care. Use weather-resistant lumber, such as pine, cedar or redwood, as the slats have a nice natural finish and are highly durable. Make sure the slats are in a very good condition, meaning the slats shouldn’t have any kind of flaw, such as splits, cracks, wanes or chips. Use finishing nails and waterproof glue. Building the frame of the duck house
The first step of the project is to build the frame of the duck house. as you can see in the image, we recommend you to build the components from 1×10 lumber. Mark the cut lines with a pencil and adjust the size of the components with a circular saw.
Top Tip: Align the components at both ends, drill pilot holes, add waterproof glue to the edges and insert the finishing nails. Make sure you assemble the box with great care, if you want to get a professional result.
Attaching the front face
Attaching the front face of the duck house is a straight forward job, as you just need to follow the information described in the free plans. Use a drill machinery and a hole drill bit to make the entrance of the duck house.
Don’t forget that you should adjust the diameter of the round entrance according to the birds you are trying to attract to your property. Cut the top of the front face at 22.5 degrees, if you want to get a nice appearance.
Installing the door
In order to have access to the interior of the duck house (the box need regular cleaning, otherwise the birds won’t move in), we recommend you to install a sliding door on one side of the box.
Top Tip: As you can easily see in the woodworking plans, we recommend you to set the support between the front and the back faces of the duck house. Afterwards fit the door and lock it to the support with metal hinges.
Attaching the roof
Continue the outdoor project by attaching the roof of the duck house. Cut a small piece of 1×12 lumber and attach it to the top of the frame, as shown in the plans. Center the slats, drill pilot holes and insert nails into the frame of the box.
Attaching the duck house to post
One of the last steps of the project is to attach the duck house to the post. After setting the wooden post into the ground, for at least 2′, you have to drill pilot holes both through the posts and through the duck house.
Insert carriage bolts front the interior of the duck house into the posts and lock the nuts tightly. Make sure the wooden house is plumb, otherwise it won’t look neat.

After installing the duck house to the post, we recommend you to continue the project by taking care of the finishing touches. Fill the pilot holes with wood putty and smooth the surface with 120-grit sandpaper.
Top Tip:Â In order to protect the lumber from water damage, we recommend you to cover the wooden box with several coats of paint. Select products that are nontoxic to the birds.
