Gambrel Small Chicken Coop Nest Boxes Plans

This step by step diy project is about 4×8 gambrel chicken coop nest boxes plans. This is PART 2 of the project, where I show you how to build the nesting boxes for the chickens. When buying the lumber, you should select the planks with great care, making sure they are straight and without any visible flaws (cracks, knots, twists, decay). Investing in cedar or other weather resistant lumber is a good idea, as it will pay off on the long run. Use a spirit level to plumb and align the components, before inserting the galvanized screws, otherwise the project won’t have a symmetrical look. How to build chicken nest boxes plans

Barn chicken coop plans

This is PART 2 of the 4×8 barn chicken coop project, so make sure you read PART 1 so you can build the main structure, as shown in the diagram.

Nest-box-floor-frame

Continue the project by assembling the floor frame for the nest boxes. Cut the components at the right dimensions and from 2×4 lumber. Drill pilot holes through the rim joists and insert 3 1/2″ screws into the perpendicular components. Align the edges flush and make sure the corners are square.

Fit the 3/4″ plywood floor to the frame. Align the edges flush and insert 1 5/8″ screws every 8″ along the joists, so you can lock them into place tightly.

Fit the floor of the nest boxes to the side of the 4×8 barn. Drill pilot holes through the frame and insert 2 1/2″ screws into the floor frame of the shed. Fit a 4×4 skid under the floor frame.

Continue the project by framing the frames for the nest boxes. Cut the components from 2×4 lumber, as shown in the diagram. Make the angle cuts using the information from the diagram. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the horizontal supports and insert 2 1/2″ screws into the vertical supports. Align the edges flush.

Fitting the nest box frames

Fit the frames to the floor of the of the nesting box and place them every 24″ on center. Secure the frames to the floor with 2 1/2″ screws, then secure them to the studs with 2 1/2″ screws. Make sure the frames are plumb.

Next box – Side siding

Fit T1-11 siding to the nesting boxes, as shown in the diagram. Use 6-8d nails to secure the siding sheets into place tightly.

Fit the T1-11 siding to the front and to the back of the nesting boxes.

Building the lid

Use 3/4″ plywood for the lid of the chicken nesting boxes. Cover the sheet with tar paper and then install shingles. Fit the 1×4 trims to the lid and secure them into place with 1 1/2″ brad nails. Insert the nails every 8″ along the trims.

Fit the lid to the nesting box and then secure it to the side walls with hinges.
