This step by step diy woodworking project is about diy dog house plans. It is essential to invest in high-quality materials that are weather-resistant, such as pressure-treated lumber. Building a dog house

Building-the-floor-of-the-dog-house

The first step of the woodworking project is about building the floor of the dog house. As you can easily notice in the plans, we recommend you to cut the 2×4 components at the right size and to assemble them together with 2 1/2″ galvanized screws. Drill pilot holes through the 24″ long slats and insert 2 1/2″ screws into the joists.

Check if the corners are right-angled before inserting the screws and drill pilot holes, to prevent the wood from splitting. Attach a piece of 3/4″ plywood over the joists and lock it into place with 1 1/4″ screws.

Building the wall frames is the next step of the project. Cut the components from 2×2 lumber and assemble them together with galvanized screws. Align the components before inserting the screws, making sure you work on a level surface. Drill pilot holes through the plates and insert 2 1/2″ screws into the vertical studs.

Top Tip: Lay the wall frames to the flooring and secure it into place with 2 1/2″ galvanized screws. Plumb the walls with a spirit level and secure them into place with 2 1/2″ screws. In addition, lock the adjacent walls together by inserting 2 1/2″ screws.

Building the exterior siding

Building the exterior walls is a straight forward process, but you need to take accurate measurements and to get the job done with a circular saw. Mark the cut lines on the 3/4″ plywood sheet and cut the walls with a saw.

Top Tip: Smooth the cut edges with sandpaper before fitting the sheets to the wall frames. Drill a starting hole and cut out the door opening with a jigsaw.

Attaching the exterior walls to the structure

Attach the plywood sheets to the wall frames and secure them to the studs with 1 1/4″ screws. Align the components with attention, making sure the edges of the walls are flush one with another.

Building the rafters for the dog house is a complex process, as you need to take accurate measurements. Mark the cut lines on the 2×2 rafters and cut them at the right size and shape by using a circular saw.

Cut one end of the rafters at 45 degrees and make a small notch, in order to fit into place properly. Continue the process until you have made all the rafters for the dog house roof.

Fit the rafters into place, as shown in the image, and lock them to the top plates and to the top ridge. Place the rafters equally-spaced and lock them into place with 2 1/2″ galvanized screws.

Top Tip: As you can easily notice, you should also attach rafters to the exterior of the front and back walls, in order to enhance the look of the dog house and to create a rigid structure. Work with attention and with great care.

Build the front and the back rafters as shown in the diagram. Cut both ends at 45 degrees using a circular saw.

Fitting the roofing sheets

Attach 3/4″ plywood sheets over the rafters and lock them into place with galvanized screws. Make sure the roofing sheets are centered over the roofing structure before inserting the 1 1/4″ screws, every 8″ along the rafters.

Fitting the trims

Build the front and back trims out of 1×3 lumber and lock them to the rafters with finishing nails. Cut both ends of the trims at 45 degrees before locking them into place, to get a professional result. Use 1 1/4″ brad nails to lock the trims into place.

Build the trims for the front of the dog house using 1×3 lumber.

Attaching the roofing

After building the structure of the dog house, we recommend you to cover the roof with tar paper. Make sure the strips of tar paper overlap at least 2″. Secure the tar paper with staples.

Top Tip: Start installing the asphalt shingles to the roofing from the bottom section towards the top. Make sure you read the instructions before installing the asphalt shingles, in order to get a professional result.

One of the last steps of the woodworking project is to take care of the finishing touches. Therefore, fill the pilot holes with wood putty and smooth the surface with 120-grit sandpaper.

Top Tip: If you want to enhance the look of the woodworking project, we recommend you to cover the components with paint or stain. Place the dog house in a proper location and move it whenever necessary.
