Building storage shelves for your garage is a great idea if you have many things you don’t use frequently or you just want to organize your tools better. In order to get the job done as a professional, build and install heavy duty brackets.

Top Tip: Adjust the distance between the shelves according to your needs. In addition, use a spirit level when installing the wooden components, otherwise they won’t have a neat look.

Building the brackets

Building the brackets

The first step of the project is to install the brackets to the wood studs of the garage. If you have installed drywall boards to the framing,  first you need to install the 2×4 studs into place. In order to build heavy-duty brackets, you need to build three layers.

Build the brackets from 2×4 lumber and secure them to the studs with 2” screws. Fit the middle component between the brackets and lock it into place with screws and glue.

Installing the brackets

Installing the brackets

Continue installing the shelves brackets into place, as in the plans. Level the brackets with a spirit level, otherwise the shelves won’t have a professional look. On the other hand, you should adjust the height at which you install the shelves and the distance between them.

Top Tip: It is essential to secure the brackets into the studs with wood screws, if you want to place heavy objects on the shelves.

Attaching the shelves slats

Attaching the shelves slats

Continue the woodworking project by installing the 2×4 slats on the brackets. As you can see in the image, you need to align the slats at both ends, before driving in the screws into the brackets. Drill pilot holes to prevent the wood from splitting.

Make sure you don’t leave gaps between the slats. In addition, you could use thick plywood (3/4” plywood) instead of the slats. Smooth the edges of the components, using a sanding block.

Last but not least, you should take care of the finishing touches. Therefore, you need to fill the cracks with wood putty and let it dry out for several hours. Afterwards, sand the wooden surfaces with 120-grit sandpaper and vacuum the residues thoroughly.

Top Tip: Protect the wooden components from wood decay by applying several coats of stain or paint.
