Patio Table Plans

by Ovidiu

This diy woodworking project is about free patio table plans. A nice rustic table made of wooden boards is perfect for any patio, as it is great for drinking your coffee in the morning or for relaxation in the hot summer days. If you haven’t found the right table for your plans, or it is just too expensive for your needs, you could get the job done by yourself, even if you don’t have a large experience in the field. Choose the right plans for your needs and buy quality materials, for a professional result.

Use wood designed for outdoor use, such as redwood, cedar or pressure-treated lumber. Cut the components to the right size and assemble them together with wood screws and glue. Apply a good glue to the components before securing the joints with screws. Pre-drill the lumber and countersink the head o the screws, to prevent the wood from splitting and to obtain a nice appearance. Round the exterior edges of the tabletop, using a router and a 1/4” dril. See all my Premium Plans HERE.

Wood Patio Table Plans

First of all, build the top of the table, as you can see in the plans. Therefore, you need to cut the boards at the proper size, using a miter saw and to lock them together with screws. Place the slats on a level surface, leaving about 1/2” between them.

Use a pocket hole jig to drill pilot holes in the slats, before driving in the 2 1/2” screws. Measure the diagonals of the rectangle, making sure they are equal and the corners square.

Building the side of the table

Afterwards, you have to continue the woodworking project by building the base of the patio table. As you can see in the image, the legs of the table are made of 4×4 lumber, while the side aprons from 2×4 lumber (you could use 1×4 lumber, as well).

Top Tip: Lock the components together, using several C-clamps, making sure the legs are plumb and the apron is aligned perfectly at both ends. Drill pocket holes and insert 2 1/2” screws, ensuring you don’t over-tighten them.

The next step is to lock both sides of the outdoor table together, securing the front and the back wooden aprons into place. Cut the lumber at 13 1/2” and lock it into place, with 2 1/2” pocket hole screws. Drill the pilot holes, using a good pocket hole jig saw.

Top Tip: Align all the components, plumb them with a spirit level and lock them together with C-clamps, before driving in the wood screws.

After you have assembled the base of the wood patio table using our plans, you need to attach the diy top. Place the top of the table on the base and lock it with several 3” screws.

Top Tip: Countersink the head of the screws, before driving them trough the table top in the wooden frame. Make sure the table top overhangs 1 1/2” on all sides of the frame. Use a spirit level to make sure the table top is horizontal.

Fill the holes with a good wood putty and let the compound to dry out properly, before sanding the surface with 120-grit sandpaper. Remove the residues with a clean cloth, before applying several coats of wood stain, along the wood grain.

Top Tip: Build a nice set of benches in order to enhance the look both of your table and patio. Work with great care and good judgement, to obtain a professional result.
