There are several plans you can choose from when building the chair, so make sure you take a look over the related plans. Work with attention and plan every step of the project from the very beginning. Use professional tools to adjust the size the components before locking them with screws and glue. Top Tip: Building a patio chair is a wonderful project for your backyard, but you need to plan everything from the very beginning.

Building the legs of the chair

Building the legs of the chair

The fist step of the woodworking project is to build the legs of the patio chair. As you can notice in the plans, we recommend you to build the legs out of 4×4 lumber, making sure the pieces are perfectly straight.

If you want to enhance the look of the chair, we recommend you to cut the ends of legs as shown in the image. Mark the cut lines with a pencil and make the cuts with a proper circular saw. Smooth the cut edges with sandpaper.

Attaching the seat supports

Continue the project by locking the components together, by installing wooden supports. Cut the components at the right size and drill pocket holes, before inserting the 2 1/2″ galvanized screws into the legs.

It is essential to plumb the legs with a spirit level before inserting the screws, as well as to check if the corners are right-angled. Add waterproof glue to the joints, if you want to make the structure rigid.

Attaching the slats

Attaching the slats

After assembling the frame of the chair, you need to fit the 1×6 slats, as shown in the image. Make sure you leave even gaps (1/2″) between the slats, as to get the job done in a professional manner.

Drill pocket holes before inserting the 1 1/4″ screws into the frame, to prevent the wood from splitting. Make the exposed corners of the seat and of the back support round, as to enhance the look of the woodworking project.

Pay attention to the information shown in the images, otherwise the slats won’t fit into place properly. Smooth the cut edges with sandpaper or make them round by using a router.

Make sure you leave about 1/2″ between the slats, if you want to get a professional result. Align the slats properly and work with great attention, if you want to prevent costly mistakes. Smooth the exposed edges with medium-grit sandpaper or by using a router with a 1/” bit.

One of the last steps of the woodworking project is to take care of the finishing touches. Therefore, fill the pilot holes with wood putty and smooth the surface with 120-grit sandpaper.

Top Tip: In order to protect the lumber from water damage, we recommend you to cover the components with several coats of paint. Place the wooden chair in a proper location and move it whenever necessary.
