Building garage cabinets

Building the sides

Building the sides

The first step of the project is to build the frame of the garage cabinet. As you can easily notice in the diagram, we recommend you to build the sides out of 3/4″ plywood. Use a circular saw to make 1/4″x1/4″ notches to the interior faces of the cabinet.

Use a chisel to remove the excess material and fine-grit sandpaper to smooth the grooves. Adjust the distance between the grooves to suit your needs.

Assembling the cabinet

Assembling the cabinet

Assembling the frame of the cabinet is a straight-forward process. Drill pilot holes through the side components and insert 1 1/4 screws to lock them together tightly. Add glue to the joints and make sure the corners are right-angled.

Building the frame

Build the top and the bottom components out of 3/4′ plywood. Fit the components to the structure and make sure the edges are perfectly flush before drilling pilot holes and inserting the 1 1/4″ screws. Add glue to the joints and remove the excess with a damp cloth. Leave no gaps between the components.

Building the shelves

Building the shelves

Build the shelves out of 1/4″ plywood, making sure you take accurate measurements before performing the cuts. Slide the shelves into the grooves and make sure everything is aligned properly.

Attaching the door

Attaching the door

Build the door for the garage cabinet out of 3/4″ plywood and lock it to the structure by using appropriate hinges. Fit a handle to the door and make sure the edges are flush with the frame of the cabinet.

One of the last steps of the woodworking project is to take care of the finishing touches. Therefore, fill the pilot holes with wood putty and smooth the surface with 120-grit sandpaper.

Top Tip: If you want to enhance the look of the project and to protect the desk from decay, we recommend you to cover the components with paint or stain. Add together a few cabinets to create storage space for you garage.
